TEHRAN – Tehran and Muscat are planning to establish a new cargo and passenger shipping route between the two countries, the Mehr News Agency quoted Bagher Mousavi, the managing director of Gheshm Ports and Maritime Organization, as saying on Saturday.
According to Mousavi, the Omani delegation has already announced its readiness to establish a route from Gheshm to Oman and vice versa, coming after the successful launching of shipping line from Shahid Rajaii Port and Oman’s Sohar.Require infrastructures have been provided and safety standards for international passenger ships to anchor in Bahman Port have been met, Mousavi noted, adding that sessions have been held to better understand and evaluate requests made by the Omani delegation about the safety measures required for passenger ships.
Already, in May, Iran and Oman launched a direct shipping line between Iran’s Shahid Rajaii Port and Oman’s Sohar Port with two sailings per month.
Also, early in February, Mohsen Zarrabi, Iran-Oman Joint chamber of Commerce Chairman, said that more vessels would join the line to increase the cycle of maritime transportation, while noting that other ports in both the countries will also be linked in the near future.
“The volume of trade between the two countries will overtake those between Iran and UAE in the near future. Oman will become a hub for re-export of Iranian goods in the region,” Zarrabi further stated.
